Electronic component parts emit considerable amounts of heat when operating. If this heat is not dissipated adequately, it may lead to damage or destruction of the component and ultimately, of the whole application.

In order to dissipate heat loss, electronic component parts are usually mounted on cooling plates or heat sinks. As a rule, the surfaces of these heat sinks are not perfectly even, requiring further treatment (milling, polishing, etc.) to achieve sufficient thermal contact. The additional work and expense of surface finishing can be avoided if optimal thermal linkage is established by means of thermally conductive interface materials. If required, these interface materials also provide electric insulation between component part and heat sink.
